About Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and Muslims are required to fast during this month. In accordance with the practice of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) Charity is also encouraged in this month and many choose this time of the year to fulfill the requirement of Zakaat.
Can you eat during Ramadan?
The fast is to abstain from food, drink and marital relations from dawn until sunset, but Muslims are also encouraged to increase in their worship in general and also the recital of the Holy Qur’an.
When does Ramadan start?
This year Ramadan 2018 begins on Tuesday May 15 and ends on Thursday June 14 (subject to new moon sighting – please check with your local Masjid/ Islamic organisation). Ramadan falls at a different time each year because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, which means there isn’t a fixed date. Ramadan is approximately ten days earlier each year.
